Do you need to find out how to create a custom WordPress login page? WordPress themes make it so easy to instantly transform 99% of your WordPress site. But most of them fall flat when it comes to letting you customize the WordPress login page.

If you’re the only person who’s going to be logging into your site, that might well be fine. But if you’re going to have other people coming and going? You probably want to put your best foot forward, right?

By default, the WordPress login page is pretty dang basic. Just a couple form fields, links, and the WordPress logo. In this post, I’ll show you how to make it “unbasic”. That is, you’ll learn how to customize the WordPress login page without needing to know a single line of code.

For the first section, I’ll use a 100% free plugin to show you how to customize the existing login page. Then, I’ll tell you how you can use premium form plugins to create an even more unique login page.

How to Customize the Default WordPress Login Page

There are a number of free plugins that help you to customize the WordPress login page. For the absolute simplest option, I like Custom Login Page Customizer because it works within the native WordPress customizer.

That means you can actually see every change that you make in real-time.

Some other plugins give you a tiny bit more functionality. But I still prefer this approach because you don’t need to keep saving and refreshing to get an idea of how your login page will look.

Here’s how to install a plugin in WordPress

Step 1: Install and Activate the Plugin

To get started, you can install and activate Custom Login Page Customizer by heading to Plugins → Add New and searching for it by name:

Once you activate the plugin, head to Appearance → Login Customizer and click the Start Customizing! button to customize your login page:

Step 2: Access the Login Customizer Options

At this point, you should see a live preview of your login page, as well as a sidebar with some options. Click the Login Customizer option to start customizing:

Now, I’ll take you through the 7 different styling options available to you:

Step 3: Upload a Custom Logo

Uploading your own logo is easy. Just click the Logo option and then Select Image:

You can either upload a new image or select an existing image from your media library.

Depending on the size of the logo that you upload, you may need to manually adjust the height and width to make sure it doesn’t look stretched.

Step 4: Set Your Backgrounds

Next, you can go back to the full menu and select Background to either upload a background image or select a static background color:

Then, pop back and go to the Form Background tab to set the background for the actual input box. Again, you can use an image or a static color:

It’s hard to read the text now, but we’ll fix that in a second!

Step 5: Choose Form Dimensions and Borders

In the Form Styling tab, you can change the size of your form and/or add a border:

Step 6: Set Field Styling

Then, in the Fields Styling tab, you can choose the size of your fields, as well as their backgrounds and colors.

For example, to fix the hard-to-read text, you’d need to make the Label Color white:

Step 6: Customize Your Button

To finish out the actual form – in the Button Styling tab, you can create custom styling for the Log In button:

Step 7: Set the Color For Your Links

Finally, in the Other tab, you can set the color for the two links that appear below the login box:

You can also use the Custom CSS box to add some additional styling. For example, if you wanted to hide the Back to Blog link, you could paste in this little code snippet:

#backtoblog {display: none; }

And that’s pretty much it! You just created a custom WordPress login page. But as you can see, it’s still limited by the same basic foundation as the default WordPress login page.

What if you want to completely change things up? That’s next!

Need to Create a Completely Custom Login Page? Use a Form Plugin

Did you know that you can actually create your very own login page? Many premium form plugins can sync up with WordPress to allow you to create custom login pages using the form plugin.

As a bonus, these plugins can also help you register new users, as well. You can read here for a full breakdown of some of the best WordPress form plugins. But generally, you’ll need a premium plugin to create your very own login page.

Once you’ve got the right tool, you just need to create a login form with the plugin. Then, you can embed that form anywhere in your site using a simple shortcode. You can even use it as part of a page builder to create a detailed login page.

Wrapping Things Up

If you just want a little more control over your login page but don’t care about completely changing the default WordPress foundation, check out Custom Login Page Customizer for an easy solution.

Otherwise, you can use your preferred form plugin to create a truly customizable login form – you’ll just usually need to pay for the privilege.
